“None of that’s true,” Ma told me as I hid inside.

“How do you know?” I asked.

She shrugged, shucking fresh corn for our barbecue.

“I dug into it myself. You think I’d raise my baby on some swamp?” she chuckled. “You can’t always believe everything people tell you. Sometimes you got to find out stuff for yourself.”
